Mission. JROTC is a program of character and leadership development. The mission of the JROTC program is, "To motivate young people to be better citizens. This course affords cadets the opportunity to develop self discipline, self confidence, integrity, personal pride, leadership, and management. The emphasis in JROTC is providing opportunities for self improvement. 2. Course Description. The LET-5 and LET-6 phase constitutes the honors phase of the JROTC program in the Huskie Battalion and is designed to allow selected cadets the opportunity to acquire additional leadership and management experience while capitalizing on their prior experience in the program. LET-5 and LET-6 cadets hold positions in the battalion, either as either Battalion Commander, Executive Officer or Special Assistants to the Senior Army Instructor (SAI). It is important to recognize that as LET-5 and LET-6 cadets you are given special trust in your duties and are in turn expected to demonstrate the highest degree of personal discipline and integrity in the program. For the purpose of Leadership Lab, LET-5/6 cadets fulfill squad member and mentor the LET-2s as they learn the practical aspects of leadership. You, as LET-5 and LET-6 cadets, are expected to maintain the highest level of energy and present yourself as a role model whether in JROTC class or not. 3. Course Sequence. A schedule of the current weeks training will be discussed each Monday. A noteworthy aspect of the LET-5/6 courses is participation in a service learning. Course Routine. Leadership Labs will normally be held during part of the class period on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday each week. Physical Training/Organized Athletics will be on Fridays (Thursday). After uniform issue, in-ranks inspections will be held every Wednesday unless otherwise indicated. 5. Participation and Clothing. Cadets are expected to actively participate in JROTC. To be excused from participation in any JROTC activity the cadet must provide a written excuse from a parent or doctor. For Leadership Lab and physical training/organized athletics, cadets are required to wear appropriate clothing and failure to wear appropriate clothing is not an excuse for nonparticipation. Leadership Labs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are best performed in comfortable soft-sole shoes. For physical training, organized athletics, and the Cadet Challenge on Fridays, appropriate clothing should be worn suitable for either indoor or outdoor activities. 6. Course Grading. Each report card period grade and the final exam grade is determined as follows: Classroom (tests, written papers, performance) 30% Uniform inspections 60% Leadership Lab Test* 10% 100% * Includes a performance test Note: In all aspects of JROTC, success is based on maturity and demonstrated performance. Cadets who participate as a cadet in good standing on a JROTC team are awarded 2 additional points at the end of each grading period. 7. Promotions and Awards. All LET-5s in the position of SASAI will begin at the rank of Captain. The Battalion Commander and Battalion Executive Officer, if applicable, begin at their authorized rank of lieutenant colonel and major respectively. All LET-6 cadets begin at SASAI authorized rank of major. To be eligible for promotion a LET-5 cadet must have a minimum C average during the first two grading periods and have missed no more than one uniform inspection without makeup. Upon failing to makeup the second missed uniform wear, the cadet will not be promoted. Furthermore, continuation in the JROTC program is contingent on meeting cadet performance expectations including classroom, lab, and uniform wearing discipline. 8. Final Exam. Final Exams in JROTC are comprised of the same three components as each grading period but with a weighting of written component 80%, leadership lab 10%, and uniform inspection component 10%. The last uniform inspection (wearing) grade will be used for the uniform component of the Final Exam. 9. Extra Curricular Activities and Service Projects. Eligible cadets are encouraged to participate in JROTC extracurricular teams which may include the Color Guard, Drill Team, and the Rifle Team dependent on cadet interest. Regardless of participation on a team, all LET-5/6 cadets are encouraged to participate in as many Blue Chip activities as possible. SUBJECT: LET-5 10.
